Holley & Irving - S/T (LP)

60.00

Composer Robert Irving’s Popornot which takes up the entire B side of this LP is an Australian Minimalism monument that sits beside the zenith works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich, maybe even beating them at their own game. In any case, a brilliant antipodean entry into the Minimalism canon.

"The LP was recorded to coincide with a concert of the works in Sydney on December 15 and 16, 1978. It was a music and modern dance event. It was the only album I put out on the Amojam label. All the musicians were Sydney performers and it was manufactured here. Sydney was in its great musical time in the 70’s as the Sydney Opera House had opened in late 1973 and after 23 years of anti-arts policies from a conservative government a new party in power brought a dynamic new time and with it enthusiasm for all things new and interesting and exciting. Whereas in prior years Australians had to travel to experience new art trends the world now came to us and much innovation happened here. I was fortunate to be part of that time and to gain exposure to great musicians in ‘my’ place. John Cage came and with him David Tudor and Takehisa Kosugi. Luciano Berio and the great Japanese performer/composer toured and musicians here in Sydney gave performances of the music of Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Morton Feldman to name just a few." - Alan Holley
