Sue Ann Harkey - The Ancient Past And The Ancient Future Are Both Seconds Away (LP)
Sue Ann Harkey is a Seattle based musician and improvisor. She plays harp-guitar and 12-string guitar, which she plays with mallets, bows, plectrums, and rods. She also explores alternate tunings and uses “prepared” techniques like weaving metal discs between the strings. She self-released many tapes on her own Cityzens for Non-Linear Futures (CNLF) label in the 80s, instrumental in the US cassette revolution. She founded the improvising jazz-without-boundaries group Audio Letter who released one LP in 1988, Neti Neti, where they were joined by legend Don Cherry.
The Ancient Past And The Ancient Future Are Both Seconds Away is Harkey’s debut solo LP, released in 1989 on her own CNLF label. The album is an excellent exploration of future folk forms, incorporating improvisation, song, extended technique and global tunings. A prescient precursor to the New Weird America scene in the late 90s. Essential Americana.
